Where is Ladakh?
It is a region of Jammu and Kashmir, the northernmost state of the Republic of India. It lies between the Kunlun mountain range in the north and the main Great Himalayas to the south.
Who lives there?
It is inhabited by the light-hearted, simple yet happy people of Indo-Aryan and Tibetan descent. They are hardy and tough akin to the rugged mountains which surround their dwellings yet very soft and plane at heart. With round faces, short noses, and chinki eyes they resemble more to the people of Tibet and central Asia than of India.
The Geography and Climate of Ladakh
Ladakh is the highest altitude plateau region in India (much of it being over 3,000 m), straddling the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges and the upper Indus River valley. The Ladakh temperature ranges from -3 to 30 degrees Celsius in the summer and from -20 to 15 degrees Celsius in the winter.
Economy in Ladakh
Ladakh depends heavily on its stable and self-reliant agricultural economy. At altitudes of 3,000m to 4,300m, they grow barley, wheat and peas and keeping livestock, especially yaks, cows, dzos, sheep and goats. It is difficult as animals are scarce and water is in short supply.
